Softball falls to Middlebury, No. 6 Luther on Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team saw its three-game winning streak get snapped in an eight-inning contest against Middlebury on Sunday during the team's Florida spring trip. CUW dropped that game 7-5 and then was downed by No. 6 Luther, 9-2, falling to 3-3 on the trip.

Middlebury used a three-run top of the eighth to take a 7-4 lead in the opening game. During the spring games, extra innings begins with a runner automatically on second base and the Panthers scored that runner and two more for the three-run frame. Middlebury got a key RBI triple from Christina Bicks in the inning as well.

CUW tried to answer in the bottom of the seventh and scored on an RBI single from senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) but that would be all it could muster, resulting in the 7-5 contest.

Robison paced the offense in the opener with three RBIs and two hits, while senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and junior Katie Lanhderr (Waukesha, Wis.) each had RBI triples in the contest. Freshman shortstop Jennifer Reicher (Kewaskum, Wis.) scored two runs.

Defense proved to be costly for CUW as it made six errors in the opening game. The Falcons pitchers, sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) and junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) allowed just four earned runs between them but three unearned runs proved to be the difference.

In the second contest CUW took on nationally ranked Luther and fell behind 4-1 after one inning of play. Luther showcased its offense, recording 10 hits and scoring nine times in the game. The 1-2 hitters of Luther combined for five hits and number three hitter Kelsey Rose drove in three runs to pace the offense.

The Falcons got RBIs from Robison and freshman Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) while Reicher scored both runs. Giesseman recorded a team best three hits.

Meyer took the loss in the circle, throwing two innings. Perkins finished the game for CUW and allowed just one earned run over her four innings of work.

CUW (5-5) will get Monday off before returning to action Tuesday. The Falcons will play another Top 25 team in No. 11 St. Thomas at 2:00 p.m. CDT and will follow that against D'Youville at 6:00 p.m.
