Softball rebounds with two wins at Finlandia Dome Tournament

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Junior Katie Landherr hit a go ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 5-4 win over Carroll University, helping the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team complete a strong day at the Finlandia Dome Tournament. The Falcons added a 20-2 drubbing of Mount Mary rebounding for two wins after going 0-2 Saturday.

Landherr's home run capped off a three-run bottom of the sixth for CUW that gave them the one-run lead heading into the seventh inning. Carroll would threaten with runners at second and third with one out in the seventh but sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) got the Pioneers to ground into a 5-3-2 game-ending double play. Perkins went the distance in game two for her first win of the season.

Carroll (1-3) built a 4-1 lead after four and a half innings of play but CUW scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth for the comeback win. Senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) also homered in the contest for the Falcons, while freshman Marisa Hahn (Northville, Mich.) paced the team with two hits, including an RBI single that helped set up the Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) home run.

The opening game was all Falcons as they jumped out to a 20-0 lead after three innings, which included a 10-run third inning. CUW pounded out 18 hits and got five solid innings from junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) as she picked up her first win in a Falcons uniform.

Giessemann belted two home runs in the opening game, finishing the day with three. She went 4-for-4 with six RBIs against Mount Mary, setting career highs for hits, RBIs, home runs, and runs scored (4) in a game.

Adding home runs in the opener was junior Jessica Liszka (Lindenhurst, Ill.) and freshman Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.). The duo helped pace the Falcons lineup, scoring a combined five times from the 1-2 spots in the batting order. Hahn added another two-hit game for the Falcons, her third in four dome games, while freshman Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) went 2-for-2.

The Falcons will be off until they go on their Spring Break trip where they will play 10 games over a six-day span in Florida. CUW opens the trip March 21 with games against St. Norbert College and UW-River Falls.
