No. 11 St. Thomas, D'Youville downs Softball in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Following a day off Monday, the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team returned to the diamond Tuesday for a pair of non-conference games on its spring trip in Florida. CUW fell against No. 11 St. Thomas, 6-0, before dropping a 7-5 extra inning contest against D'Youville.

The extra inning contest against the Spartans was the third time CUW needed extra innings in the past six games. The Falcons defeated MIT in nine innings on Saturday and fell 7-5 in eight innings against Middlebury Sunday. CUW has now dropped four straight after starting 3-1 on the spring trip, two of those losses coming against Top 25 competition.

Defense continues to hurt the Falcons as they combined to make 10 errors in the two games. Of the 13 runs scored against CUW on Tuesday, just four were earned.

In the game against D'Youville, CUW allowed two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to fall behind 7-5. The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the frame with two runners on (one was placed on second to start the inning) but the Spartans held on for the two-run win.

Freshmen Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Sophia Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) each had two hits in the second game for the Falcons as they totaled nine as a team. Holsten had one of the team's three RBIs, while freshman Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) and senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) each drove in a run. D'Youville was paced by Lauren DeVantier as she recorded two hits.

Sophomore Melissa Perkins (Forest Park, Ill.) took the loss for CUW despite allowing no hits in three innings of relief. Perkins struck out two. Kalie McHenry went the distance for D'Youville, striking out eight.

The opener saw St. Thomas score once in the first, second and fifth innings in building a 3-0 lead over CUW. The Tommies would then break the game open with a three-run sixth inning to down CUW by a 6-0 score.

Kendra Bowe was tough to solve as the Tommies pitcher threw a complete game four-hitter. Bowe struck out seven batters. Perkins threw all six innings for the Falcons, surrendering two earned runs and striking out one.

CUW (5-7) will close its spring trip tomorrow with a pair of games beginning at noon CST. The Falcons will battle SUNY Potsdam in the first game before closing its Florida schedule against Calvin.
