Softball defeats MIT, Keene St. in day two of Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman Alexis Holsten delivered a game-winning triple in the top of the ninth of game one and junior Felicia Meyer turned in a gem in the circle in game two as the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team picked up a pair of victories in Florida Saturday. CUW is now 3-1 on its spring trip.

In the game one, 6-5 win over MIT the Falcons needed nine innings to outlast the Engineers. Holsten delivered the big hit with the ninth-inning triple plating junior Katie Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.). The Falcons won game two over Keene St. by a 6-1 score.

The game was sent to extras when MIT scored in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 5-5. CUW took the lead in the top of the seventh on a RBI groundout by senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), scoring Holsten.

Each team had a big fifth inning as both plated three runs in the frame. Giesseman had an RBI single in the top of the fifth for the Falcons as she paced the team with two RBIs. Freshman Jennifer Reicher (Kewaskum, Wis.) had three hits to pace the Falcons in the opener.

Sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill. - pictured) started the game for CUW and lasted four innings, surrendering just one earned run. Senior Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) gained the win in the circle, throwing five strong innings, giving up zero earned runs and striking out five. 

In the opener it was junior Felica Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) who delivered a gem in the circle. She pitched 6.1 innings and struck out eight while allowing just one run in the win over Keene St. Perkins came on the get the final two outs for CUW.

Sophomore Marisa Hahn (Northville, Mich.) paced the team with three hits in game two as the Falcons used a three-run third and two-run second to build a 6-0 lead. CUW also scored once in the second inning.

Three freshmen had doubles in the second contest in Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) Erinn Neidinger (Slinger, Wis.) and Reicher. Reicher's double plated a run in the third inning, while Neidinger used her two-bagger to plate one in the fourth. Sobrilsky gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with her RBI double in the top of the second.

CUW (5-3) will return to action tomorrow when they take on Middlebury and Luther. The first game is set for 10 a.m. CDT, while the contest against the No. 6 ranked Luther team is set for noon.
