Schuh's two-hit shutout helps Softball salvage split against Rockford

MEQUON, Wis. – Senior Jamie Schuh delivered a two-hit shutout in game two of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Rockford University to help Concordia University Wisconsin salvage a split. The Falcons dropped a 6-5 game in 11 innings in the opener before winning 6-0 in game two at the CUW Softball Field.

Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) was masterful in helping the Falcons win game two. She finished with 10 strikeouts compared to just one walk and in the process moved to within four strikeouts from tying the school's all-time record. Schuh will likely get a chance to set the record in Wednesday's home doubleheader.

Junior Jessica Liszka (Lindenhurst, Ill.) had a strong day at the plate for the Falcons, combining for five hits over two games. In the opener Liszka finished a home run shy of the cycle. Senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) added a monster game one, finishing 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. Junior Katie Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) added a roundtripper in game one.

The opener was a thrilling contest that saw Rockford score once in the sixth and once in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. Rockford would then go up 6-4 in the top of the eighth when Lynn Blakely-Snyder belted a two-run home run. Landherr had the answer, however, hitting a two-run home run over the left field wall and sending the game to more extras.

After a scoreless ninth and tenth, RU would get the winning run in the top of the 11th when Lisa Blakely-Snyder doubled in Maranda Walker. The Regents would secure the final three outs in the bottom of the 11th, giving the Falcons its second extra-innings setback in as many days.

The Falcons would rebound in game two by jumping out to a lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. CUW would add one in the second and three in the sixth, not that Schuh needed it as she was in control throughout.

Senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) recorded an RBI in each game, while freshman Sophia Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) scored two runs in the game two win.

The Falcons used three pitchers in the opener as sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) started the game, throwing 6.2 innings. Junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) was the pitcher of record, while Schuh came on to record the final two outs.

CUW (12-10, 6-2 NACC) will return to the diamond Wednesday by hosting Wisconsin Lutheran College in a NACC doubleheader. First pitch from the CUW Softball Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
