Schuh delivers another shutout, Softball splits with Wisconsin Lutheran

MEQUON, Wis. – Senior Jamie Schuh threw her second straight shutout as the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team split with Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday at the CUW Softball Field. The Falcons won the opener, 3-0, before falling in game two by a 9-6 score in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill.

Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) ran her scoreless innings streak to 14 with the four-hit shutout in the opener. The senior faced just 26 batters in the game, walking two and striking out one. She now has 337 career strikeouts, four away from setting the programs all-time mark.

Back-to-back-to-back doubles by freshmen Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Jennifer Reicher (Kewaskum, Wis. - pictured) and senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) in the third inning gave Schuh her run support as the Falcons built a 2-0 lead. CUW would gain an unearned run in the fifth for the 3-0 game one win.

Holsten and Giesseman paced the offense with two hits apiece in the opener. Freshman Sophia Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.), Reicher and Holsten scored the Falcons runs.

Game two saw the visiting Warriors strike for six runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-6 win. The game was tied 3-3 heading into the seventh before the WLC offense exploded. Tara Degl'Innocenti had an inside-the-park home run and Brittany Blazich ripped a bases-clearing triple in the six-run frame.

The Falcons battled back in the bottom of the seventh, putting the tying run at the plate but ultimately the comeback bid fell short. Senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.), freshman Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) and junior Katie Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) had RBI singles in the three-run seventh for CUW.

Robison started the scoring in game one with a solo home run to right field. WLC would answer with three in the fifth but the Falcons came back with one each in the fifth and sixth innings, making the score tied heading into the final inning of play.

Reicher, Robison, Sobrilsky and Landherr paced the Falcons offense with two hits each in game two. Robison delivered two RBIs in the contest. Blazich led the Warriors with three hits, scoring twice and driving in three.

Kendra Thomas pitched all 13 innings for WLC (14-10, 6-4 NACC) and earned the win in game two. Sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) was the Falcons pitcher of record, while junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) made a relief appearance in the seventh inning.

CUW (13-11, 7-3 NACC) will return to action this Saturday in a NACC doubleheader at Marian University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
