Baseball Splits the Battle of Concordias

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW baseball team hosted the Cougars of Concordia Chicago on Sunday afternoon. After a 98-minute rain delay, the Falcons took game one of the series, 12-9, before the Cougars rallied to take game two, 15-5. The Blue and White move to 13-19 on the year and 7-9 in NACC play.

The Cougars were the first team on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning in game one.

Senior Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.) tied the game in the third inning when he knocked the ball through the left side of the infield to score senior Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.).

The Cougars regained the lead in the fourth inning when an error scored two runs.

Sophomore Sterling Armstrong (Lake Barrington, Ill.) took a bite out of the CUC lead in the fourth inning on a home run.

The bat of senior Kyle Kosobucki (De Pere, Wis.) tied the game in the fifth inning with a shot to shortstop that Sam Beers reached home on. Junior Cole Aguirre (Chino Hills, Calif.) then gave the Falcons the lead with a double into the gap in left-center field that scored Kosobucki and Haakenson.

The Cougars took back the lead at 7-4 in the seventh inning on a grand slam.

The Falcons countered with eight runs in the seventh inning to take control of the game.

Sterling Armstrong started the comeback when he drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Sam Beers.

Senior Tristan Largent (Verona, Wis.) blasted the ball to the fence in deep centerfield and was inches away from a grand slam, but cleared the bases with a triple that landed Armstrong, Aguirre and Kosobucki on home plate.

Senior Daniel Hahn (Cudahy, Wis.) later scored Largent on an infield single.

Sean Tillmon showed that he has one of the hottest bats in the NACC with an absolute blast over the fence in left field that scored Hahn.

Sam Beers followed that up with a home run of his own to center field.

The Cougars rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, but that would not be enough.

Freshman Chris Rooney (Mundelein, Ill.) earned his first victory on the mound with four strikeouts to finish the game.

CUW scored 10 of its runs with two outs in game one.

Sam Beers led the flock with four hits in the victory.

Sean Tillmon extended his hit streak to 17 games in game one.

The Cougars used the long ball to their advantage in game two and started the game with a three-run shot to centerfield.

Johannes Haakenson responded with a single to left field that scored Daniel Hahn to make it a 3-1 game after the first inning.

CUC scored the next seven runs in the game to balloon the lead to 10-1.

The Falcons put a dent in the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. A triple for Daniel Hahn scored senior Dilan Fike (Oak Lawn, Ill.). Hahn later scored on a sacrifice fly from Sean Tillmon.

Sam Beers ended his blistering week in the seventh inning with a two-run home run to right field that also landed Daniel Hahn across home plate.

Senior Zach Swift (Longwood, Fla.) led the birds on the mound with two strikeouts and did not allow a walk in three innings.

Sam Beers and Daniel Hahn both had three hits in the victory.

The Falcons look to continue their fight for the NACC Tournament on Saturday when Lakeland comes to town.
