Falcons Feast at Back End of Spring Break Trip

TUCSON, Ariz. – The CUW baseball team played two of their final three Spring Break matchups in Arizona.

The Falcons began the day by squeezing one out against Hamline who they had played earlier this week.

The blue and white started the scoring with the Janesville, Wisconsin duo of seniors Sam Beers and Johannes Haakenson. Beers batted Haakenson in with a single. Beers crossed the plate later off the bat of senior Dillan Fike (Oak Lawn, Ill.).

Hamline tied up the game with a run in both the second and fourth innings.

Three Falcons crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Beers and Haakenson connected for the first with a double for Beers that drove in Haakenson. Beers was walked in from third later that inning and senior Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) was driven in by senior Drew Johnson (Menasha, Wis.).

Hamline ate up the sixth and seventh innings with two runs in each to take the 6-5 lead.

Fike was able to score Beers to tie the game at six in the bottom of the ninth inning. Johnson was then able to drive in senior Daniel Hahn (Cudahy, Wis.) to take the 7-6 victory over Hamline.

It was all Falcons all day in game two of the doubleheader, but this time against Macalester. The Falcons dominated and forced the game into only seven innings with a 10-run rule.

The Falcons started quickly with an RBI single to center field off the bat of Sean Tillmon that scored Haakenson.

Beers had himself a day with a pair of RBIs on a triple up the middle that scored both Haakenson and senior Brandon Niedfeldt (Roscoe, Ill.) in the bottom of a stacked third inning.

Tillmon drove in Beers with a double to left field to extend the lead even further to four runs.

Senior Kyle Kosobucki (De Pere, Wis.) drove in Tillmon with a single to left-center and was batted in later along with Fike off the bat of Johnson.

That wasn't it for the Falcon bats in the third inning with FRESHMAN Kyle Flynn (Downers Grove, Ill.) blasting a triple to right field to score Johnson and Niedfeldt crushing a ball to center field to score Flynn.

That was all eight of the Falcon runs in the bottom of the third inning.

On a walk by Fike, Beers was walked in as well giving the Falcons their 10th run of the afternoon. Johnson also drove in Tillmon on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The fifth inning saw four more runs with senior Tristen Largent (Verona, Wis.) destroying a double down the middle to score Haakenson, Beers, and Fike. Largent crossed the plate later on a single from Johnson.

Macalester attempted to not get run-ruled with four runs in the top of the seventh, but could not overcome the Falcon lead.

The flock finishes up their Spring Break trip to Tucson with a matchup on Sunday against Gustavus Adolphus.
