Men's Hockey season comes to an end in Harris Cup Quarterfinals

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team needed a win Saturday night to force a mini-game and a chance to keep their season alive. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Lake Forest was able to pick up its second win in as many nights, this one a 2-1 final in overtime, ending the Falcons season in the process.

THE BASICS
- Final Score:
Lake Forest 2, Concordia Wisconsin 1 (F/OT)
- Location: Ozaukee Ice Center – Mequon, Wisconsin
- Records: Lake Forest 15-10-2; Concordia Wisconsin 16-9-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Knowing they needed a win, CUW was forced to pull its goaltender in the final minute of overtime. The Foresters were able to get an empty net score with one second remaining for the 2-1 final. The clock showed the time ran out and there was confusion as to whether the goal counted but the officials credited Charlie Izaguirre with the empty net score, resulting in the 2-1 final.

- The story of the contest was the impressive play of Nick Malvin (Ham Lake, Minn.) and his counterpart, Louis-Phillipe De Courcy. Malvin made 29 saves in the contest, including 15 in the opening stanza. De Courcy finished the game with 43 stops for the Foresters.

- Both teams scored in the second period with the Falcons striking first Saturday night. Taylor Gauld (Whitby, Ontario) scored 8:43 into the frame on a goal assisted by Nick Guiney (Victoria, British Columbia) and Braydon Barker (Red Deer, Alberta).

- Exactly one minute later the Foresters tallied a power play goal off the stick of Aaron O'Neill. The score was the only power play tally of the night as Lake Forest finished the game 1-for-3 while the Falcons were 0-for-4 with the advantage. CUW had an impressive 1:39 of a 5-on-3 kill in the opening moments of the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Falcons conclude a program-best season. CUW won 16 games and hosted a playoff series for the first time in program history in 2017-18.

- The contest also concluded the careers of the winningest class in program history for the Falcons. Brody Decker, Travis Marit, Justin Coachman, Jared Pilet, and Nick Szopinski have helped take the Falcons to new heights during their impressive careers.
