Women’s Tennis Takes Down Carroll

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW women's tennis team opened their season Friday with an 8-1 victory over the Pioneers of Carroll University to take home the CU Cup.

The senior duo, Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), quickly secured the first CUW doubles point with an impressive 8-3 victory in No. 1 doubles.

Soon after, in No. 2 doubles, seniors Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) pulled out the 8-6 victory.

No. 3 doubles saw freshman Sofia Buhr (Blumenau, Brazil) and junior Mya Werning (Watertown, Wis.) battle in a back-and-forth matchup, which saw the Falcons sneak away with the 8-7 victory.

Following doubles, the Falcons held a solid 3-0 lead.

Sofia Buhr wasted no time and was the first off the court in singles play for the Falcons as she found her groove early and cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles.

Minutes later, in No. 5 singles, Mia Andrae took care of business and secured a pair of 6-3 victories.

The Pioneers would take a point from the Falcons in No. 6 singles.

After a tight first set in No. 2 doubles won by Ashley Samuta 7-6, Samuta took control in the second set and grabbed the 6-1 victory.

Ricky Budewitz battled in No. 1 singles, earning the 7-5, 6-2 victory, which was capped off by an athletic return near the net.

Mallory Moen closed the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set after winning the first 7-5.

With the win, the Falcons reclaim the CU Cup trophy for the first time since the 2019-2020 season.

CUW will travel north to St. Norbert College on Friday, Sept. 8, to start conference play.
