Falcons Defeat Calvin; Fall to No. 15 Carnegie Mellon

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's tennis team faced a challenging test on Thursday against a previously undefeated Calvin and No. 15 Carnegie Mellon. The Falcons opened the day with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Calvin and closed the night with an 8-1 loss to the 15th-ranked Tartans.

The Falcons picked up two points in doubles play against the Knights.

The senior duo of Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) secured an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Freshman Sofia Buhr (Blumenau, Brazil) and senior Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) picked up an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Calvin collected a 4-2 lead with victories on courts four, five and six.

Ricki Budewitz topped Tess Holman at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Sofia Buhr bounced Marina Nonto Ribeiro at No. 2 singles.

The match came down to Ashley Samuta at No. 3 singles. Samuta snagged a 6-2 victory in the first set. Catherine Grissom rallied with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Samuta then clinched the victory for Concordia with a 10-8 victory in the third-set tiebreaker.

The loss is the first of the year for Calvin as the Knights fall to 7-1.

The Falcons picked up their first point of the night with senior Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) and junior Mya Werning (Watertown, Wis.) at No. 3 doubles with an 8-6 victory.

The point the Falcons earned was the first point that Carnegie Mellon has given up to a non-ranked NCAA Division III team.

Ashley Samuta put up a valiant fight at No. 3 singles and took the first set with a 6-3 victory.

No. 15 Carnegie Mellon moves to 8-4 on the year and the Falcons are now at 14-3.

The Falcons finish spring break play on Friday against St. Scholastica.
