MEQUON, Wis. – It was all smiles for the home opener on Friday afternoon for the Concordia Wisconsin women's soccer program. The Falcons secured a 1-0 victory over Lawrence to start the season at 1-0-0.
The Falcons were quick to the attack on Friday with a shot from junior Autumn Snow (Cedarburg, Wis.) in the first minute.
The Vikings kept senior Brooke Braga (Belgium, Wis.) busy in the goal with two saves in the first 11 minutes.
The Birds had shots from senior Sabrina Moore (Park Ride, Ill.) and junior Brei Rozmiarek (West De Pere, Wis.) late in the half, but the teams went into halftime, tied at zero.
The Blue and White broke the seal in the 64th minute with a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Senior Bella Rapp (Grafton, Wis.) sailed the ball past the goalie and into the net for the lone goal of the contest.
The Vikings threatened, but the Concordia defense thwarted their attempts.
Lawrence held an 11-9 advantage in shots on Friday. Autumn Snow led the CUW attack with three shots.
Brooke Braga secured her first clean sheet of the season with five saves. Friday marked her 19th complete game shutout and her 22nd overall.
Eight of the last 10 Concordia victories have been shutouts, over the last three seasons, 19 of the 23 victories have been shutouts.
The Falcons will now face a fierce test at No. 13 Loras on Wednesday night.
