Women’s Hockey upsets Lake Forest in Slaats Cup

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Falcons took game one from the two-game quarterfinal series against the No. 2 seed Foresters on Friday night. The Blue and White bounced Lake Forest 3-2 to improve to 9-14-2 on the season. The victory is also the first Slaats Cup victory for the Falcons since the 2015 semifinals against Adrian.

The Foresters struck first on the power play on Friday night in the first period.

Junior Ally Hull (Wasilla, Alaska) leveled the game at one on the power play with a shot in front of net with senior Sam Lombardi (Ancaster, Ont.) and sophomore Maddy Millar (Anchorage, Alaska) adding the assists.

Sophomore Megan McPike (Mequon, Wis.) broke the tie in the second period off a pass from Sam Lombardi.

The power play pushed ahead 89 seconds later on the stick of Ally Hull. Maddy Millar fed Hull for her second goal of the game.

The third period saw the Foresters cut the lead with a goal at the 9:21 mark of the period.

Senior Breanna Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) stood tall in the net for the rest of the game to secure the victory.

Lake Forest held a 42-31 advantage in shots on Friday. Leading CUW with five shots was senior Emily Godwin (London, Ont.), Ally Hull and Maddy Millar.

Breanna Thomson secured 40 saves in the victory.

Friday night was the first time since Feb. 17, 2018 that the Falcons have scored on all of their power play opportunities. CUW went two-for-two on Friday night. The two power-play goals in the game for Ally Hull ties the school record.

Senior Natasha Wanless (Madison, Wis.) won 10 faceoffs on Friday evening.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon for game two. If the Falcons win or tie, they will advance to the Slaats Cup Semifinals. If Lake Forest wins, there will be a minigame to decide who advances.
