Falcons top Trine in NCHA opener

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW defense silenced the Thunder of Trine that came into Friday with the second-ranked offense in NCAA Division III with a 3-1 victory. The victory also propels the Blue and White to 1-0-0 in the NCHA.

The CUW captain, senior Issy Bilton (Burlington, Ont.) put the Falcons up early with a shot in front of the net. Sophomore Sarah Pearson (South Range, Wis.) and senior Natasha Wanless (Madison, Wis.) were both credited with the assists.

Junior Madi Chapman (Rogers, Minn.) stole the puck and threw the puck up past the keepers' glove, after the Falcons killed off a penalty in the first period.

The CUW defense killed off all three penalties in the first period.

In the second period, Natasha Wanless broke through a pair of defenders off a pass from Issy Bilton and snuck the puck past the Trine keeper.

The Thunder scored midway through the second period from a shot in front of the net.

The Blue and White kept the Thunder power play puzzled in the second period once again as CUW killed off both penalties. CUW finished the night with another penalty kill in the third period to finish the evening with all six penalties killed off.

Senior Breanna Thomson (St. Mary's, Ont.) was stellar in the net once again for the Falcons on Friday with 39 saves, tying the season high.

Trine held a 39-24 shots advantage on Friday. Natasha Wanless led CUW with seven shots.

The Falcons will tangle with Trine again on Saturday afternoon.
