Softball slugs way to doubleheader sweep over MSOE

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team scored 28 runs in two games as they slugged their way to a doubleheader sweep over MSOE Monday at the CUW Softball Complex. The Falcons won both games in five innings, taking the first contest 13-1 before winning game two, 15-3.

CUW totaled 29 hits, which included four home runs in the doubleheader sweep. Senior Abbie Goetsch (Grayslake, Ill.) hit a home run in each game, while senior Cara Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) and junior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) each recorded round trippers in the opener.

In game CUW jumped on the board with five runs in the first inning, scoring all five with two outs. Landherr singled in junior Stephanie Kramer (Fond du Lac, Wis.) to start the scoring and Robison capped off the five-run first with a three-run home run.

The Falcons would go on to add four runs in the second, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth as they cruised to a 13-1 victory. Landherr finished the opener 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, four runs scored, and three driven in. Junior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) added three hits, while scoring twice and driving in two. Leadoff batter sophomore Jessica Liszka (Lindenhurst, Ill.) added a triple for the Falcons.

Junior Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) picked up the win in the circle for CUW as she threw four innings and allowed just one hit. Schuh struck out five and walked none to pick up her fifth win of the season. Freshman Alyssa Wolf (Oconomowoc, Wis.) finished the game by pitching the fifth inning.

In game two the Falcons built a 3-1 lead after two innings of play before erupting for 12 runs in the top of the third inning on 10 hits. CUW did all of its damage after two outs in the third and the rally started when Goetsch launched her second home run of the day over the center field wall. Robison added a bases-clearing triple to cap off the 12-run third.

The Falcons (11-11, 5-3 NAC) got production from all over the lineup in game two as five players drove in at least two runs, led by Robison who finished with four RBIs. The two through five hitters for CUW, which were senior Jannelle Schroder (Colgate, Wis.), Kramer, Landherr, and Goetsch, each recorded two hits, scored two runs, and tallied at least two RBIs.

Freshman Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) earned her sixth victory of the season for CUW as she pitched four innings, allowing three hits and surrendering no earned runs. Wolf pitched the fifth in game two as well for the Falcons.

CUW is next scheduled to play Wednesday when they host Edgewood College in a NAC doubleheader. First pitch between the Falcons and Eagles is set for 3 p.m. at the CUW Softball Complex.
