Schuh tosses no-hitter, Softball splits with Marian

MEQUON, Wis. – Junior pitcher Jamie Schuh tossed a no-hitter in game one as the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team split a pair of games with Marian University Thursday at the CUW Softball Complex.

CUW won the opening game 8-0 behind the no-hit bid from Schuh (Freedom, Wis.). Schuh was dominant from the start as she struck out nine batters and walked just three for the complete-game victory.

The Falcons offense gave Schuh plenty of support in the opener as they plated two runs in each of the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead. Senior Cara Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) drove in a run with an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, giving CUW a 2-0 after one. In the bottom of the second sophomore Jessica Liszka (Lindenhurst, Ill.) smacked a RBI double and then scored on a single from freshman Lexi Wagner (Richfield, Wis.), making the score 4-0 in favor of the home team.

CUW (7-9, 1-1 NAC) would then add four more runs in the bottom of the third despite registering no base hits in the inning. The Falcons used six free passes and a wild pitch from Sabres pitching to plate the four runs, building an 8-0 lead. That would be all Schuh would need as she finished off the no-hitter, giving the Falcons a five-inning game one victory.

The second game saw CUW come one out away from finishing off Marian (3-11, 1-1 NAC) for a doubleheader sweep as it led 3-2 with two outs in the seventh. The Sabres had other ideas, however, as Emily Gorges singled in pinch runner Bridgette Stelsel with two outs in the seventh, tying the score at 3-3.

The 3-3 score would remain until the top of the 10th when MU scored the eventual winning run with an RBI single from Nikki Jakel, plating Daniele Gerth.

The Falcons offense recorded 11 hits in game two as Wagner, junior Stephanie Kramer (Fond du Lac, Wis.), and seniors Abbie Goetsch (Grayslake, Ill.) and Jannelle Schroder (Colgate, Wis.) all recorded two hits. Kramer drove in two runs in the second game and had a triple, while Schroder had a RBI triple of her own.

Freshman Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) took the loss in the circle despite throwing nine-plus quality innings. Perkins struck out eight batters and allowed just two earned runs. Gorges got the win, throwing all 10 innings and striking out three.

The Falcons return to action Saturday when they host Concordia University Chicago in a NAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the CUW Softball Complex.
