Falcons silence the Thunder

ANGOLA, Ind. – The CUW men's hockey team secured its first victory of the season on Thursday night with a 5-3 victory at Trine.

"Today was just a real gut-check, greasy road victory," said head coach Bill Horton. "They battled and pulled together to stay with it. We had contributions from everyone up and down the lineup."

The Thunder struck first on Thursday with two goals in the first period.

Senior Nick Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) put the Falcons on the scoreboard with 6.6 second left in the first period on the power play tipping the puck out of the air off a shot from junior Cory Dennis (Madison, Wis.), who was fed the puck by senior Cole Pickup (Victoria, B.C.).

After a scoreless second period, senior Luke Ranallo (St. Paul, Minn.) leveled the game with a shot past the Trine goalie's left leg, after skating past four skaters.

Junior Jacob Palmerio (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) gave the Falcons the lead putting in a rebound from freshman Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.).

The Thunder tied the game on the power play.

Cory Dennis was able to sneak the puck past a diving goalie to give the Falcons the lead with 1:41 remaining. Senior Nick Guerra (Victoria, B.C.) and freshman Michael Makarenko (Calgary, Alta.) had the Concordia assists.

Sophomore Alex Way (Ottawa, Ont.) capped off the night with an empty-net goal with assist from Cole Pickup and freshman Jordan Guiney (Victoria, B.C.).

Junior Bo Didur ( West Vancouver, B.C.) collected 41 saves in the victory.

Trine held a 44-36 advantage in shots on Thursday.

Luke Ranallo led the Falcons with five shots,

Jordan Guiney won eight faceoffs for CUW on the evening.

CUW will go for the sweep on Saturday in Wisconsin.
