Falcons begin season with tough MWLC win over Augsburg

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia Wisconsin and Augsburg battled it out on Saturday afternoon at Fitting Field, but it was the Falcons who scored the game's final three goals to earn a 9-8 come-from-behind victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Allison Kurek assisted on a Katherine Pauletti goal with 5:48 to play in the game, which knotted the scoreboard at 8-8, and then scored the game-winner just 35 seconds later. The Falcons defensive then forced three Auggie turnovers down the stretch to hold on for the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference victory.
- Augsburg led from the start and held a two-goal lead for most of the first half and even with 14:22 to play in the game. Caitlin Henry tallied her only goal of the contest to get CUW with a goal, 8-7, with 7:36 to play.
- Both teams played physically, which resulted in six yellow cards and 31 fouls be called. However, a combined 15 free-position shots could have been taken but the defense for both teams had other thoughts. As well, there were a combined 57 turnovers in the contest.
- Freshman Lauren Paquin (Waukesha, Wis.) led the Falcons with a hat trick, to go along with four caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.
- Kurek (sophomore, Chicago, Ill.) and senior Sabrina Boehlke (Random Lake, Wis.) each had a pair of goals. Kurek also picked up nine ground balls, won four draw controls and caused four turnovers. Boehlke also won four draw controls and picked up three ground balls.
- Pauletti and freshman Ellie Woodman (Janesville, Wis.) each ended with a trio of caused turnovers.
- Junior Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) made seven saves between the pipes and picked up seven ground balls during a complete game winning effort

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Kurek's nine ground balls tied the program's single game record, which she set last season along with Metanova.
- The Falcons caused 18 turnovers, which was tied for the ninth most in a game in program history.
- It is the fourth-consecutive season CUW has started a season with a victory.

THE OPPOSITION
- Sheala Osborne led the Auggies with a hat trick, while Aliya Hinz tallied a pair of goals. Osborne also recorded four draw control wins, while Delaney Everett caused four turnovers.
- Marissa Guillou made eight saves between the pipes in a complete game losing effort.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
- The Falcons return to action on Tuesday for a 4 pm MWLC contest against Illinois Institute of Technology at Fitting Field.
