Falcons Stand Alone in First Place

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons stand alone in first place in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) standings after a battle of unbeaten teams in the NACC and a trip to Alverno. The Falcons opened the day upsetting the darlings of the NACC Preseason Poll in Edgewood, 5-4. The birds then flew east to close the day with a 9-0 victory at Alverno. The victories send the Falcons to 6-2 on the year and 6-0 in the NACC.

The Falcons threw the first punch of the day when sophomore Cheyanne Phillips (Morris, Ill.) and sophomore Mya Werning (Watertown, Wis.) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.

Senior Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) and junior Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) rallied to force a tiebreaker but fell short on court two.

Junior Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and senior Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) gave the Falcons the lead with an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Ashley Samuta leveled Jewel Lindwall at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The Eagles stormed back and edged their way to almost securing the victory with victories on courts three, five and six.

Cheyanne Phillips came out on top of a rollercoaster of a match at No. 4 singles against Evelyn Taylor with a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory.

Ricki Budewitz proved why she is one of the best in the NACC when she knocked out Cecile Fuchs at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the victory.

This is the first regular-season victory for the Falcons over the Eagles since 2017.

There was no time to dilly dally and to celebrate the victory as the Falcons packed the van and traveled to Alverno to close the day.

Sophomore Kaylee Frerking (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman Maddie Brashaw (Sheboygan, Wis.) extinguished the Inferno at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.

Junior Auden Pearson (Kaukauna, Wis.) and freshman Abigail Schwartz (Brookfield, Wis.) sank Alverno at No. 2 doubles, 8-0.

Mia Andrae and Mallory Moen picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles sweep.

Ricki Budewitz won by retirement to improve to 2-0 at No. 1 singles on the day.

Abigail Schwartz shredded Merub Irfan at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Kaylee Frerking fried Michal Irfan on court five, 6-1, 6-0.

Auden Pearson picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Elizabeth Wolf-Nowakowski at No. 2 singles.

Maddie Brashaw brushed away Ivonna Gentry at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Mya Werning wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Alaina Kamalian at No. 4 singles.

A few Falcons will head to the ITA Regional Championships next weekend in Minnesota. CUW returns as a team on Oct. 1 at Lakeland.
