ANGOLA, Ind. – The 15-ranked Thunder of Trine took round one of the weekend series on Saturday night with a 6-2 victory. The loss sends CUW to 1-3-0 on the young season and to 0-1-0 in the NCHA.
The Thunder struck first with two goals in the first period.
Junior Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.) put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a backhanded shot off the shoulder of the Trine netminder.
Trine added another goal 17:41 into the period.
The Thunder added to the lead at 5:51 into the third period.
Junior Dain Sardelli (Hebron, N.D.) cut into the Trine lead as he rang the puck off the post and into the back of the net 29 seconds after the Trine goal coming off assists from senior Zach Brydges (Woodbury, Minn.) and freshman Devon Savignac (Sudbury, Ontario).
The Blue and Gold scored the final two goals of the contest.
The Thunder held a 73-20 advantage in shots on Saturday night.
Freshman Cameron Hrdlicka (Calgary, Alberta) had 40 saves against the Thunder.
Freshman Jack Guvenal (Georgetown, Ontario) led CUW with four shots.
The Falcons look to level the weekend series on Sunday afternoon.
