SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's hockey team closed the 2024 calendar year with a thrilling 8-6 victory at Gustavus Adolphus. The Falcons finish the fall semester with a winning record of 7-6-0.
The Golden Gusties started the scoring in the first three minutes of the game.
Gustavus Adolphus added to the lead with a power-play goal.
The power play capitalized again with 8:21 left in the first period for Gustavus Adolphus.
The Falcons responded with a goal of their own 14 seconds later after they marched down the ice and great passes from sophomore Mi-Kwan Tallman (Edmonton, Alberta) and sophomore Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.) found freshman Devon Savignac (Sudbury, Ontario) in front of the net.
The Falcons scored a power-play goal of their own when senior Seth Bergeron (Minneapolis, Minn.) tapped in a rebound off a slapshot from Devon Savignac that was found off a cross-ice pass from sophomore Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, British Columbia).
The Golden Gusties elevated the lead back to two with a goal 85 seconds into the second period.
The Falcons did not go away and lit the lamp 3:15 into the period when Seth Bergeron tipped in the puck off a shot from freshman Ty Petzke (Sheboygan, Wis.).
Three minutes later, Alex Ochitwa tied the game on a rebound off a shot from freshman Jack Guvenal (Georgetown, Ontario).
With 10:18 left in the second period, freshman Evan Forrest (Spruce Grove, Alberta) gave the Falcons the lead as he went down in front of the net off a pass from junior Grant Newcomer (McFarland, Wis.).
Gustavus tied the game with three seconds left in the second period on the power play.
The Golden Gusties started the scoring for the third consecutive period on Saturday with a goal 3:47 into the third frame.
The Falcons tied the game once again with Jack Guvenal scoring at the far post off a great pass from freshman Connor Van Wheelie (Mississauga, Ontario).
To quote the Gustavus broadcast oh brother, the Falcons struck late again on Saturday with a goal from junior Derrick Humpreys (Spokane, Wash.) off a pass from Connor Van Wheelie.
Connor Van Wheelie added an empty net goal with seven seconds left to put a bow on the final celebration of 2024.
Freshman Cameron Hrdlicka (Calgary, Alberta) had 19 saves in the victory.
The Golden Gusties held a 25-22 advantage in shots on Saturday.
This is the first four-game winning streak since March 2021. This is also the first time that CUW had a winning record in the fall semester since the 2019-20 season. This is the first time that the Falcons had a perfect December since 2015 when they went 2-0 against Aurora.
