ACHA Loses Late at Lindenwood

Written by CUW Student Assistant Lance Schulteis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The CUW ACHA hockey team dropped to 6-3-1 on the season following a loss to Lindenwood, being handed its first loss since September 23. Concordia entered the third period with a two-goal lead before a strong rally by the Lions gave them the tie and the lead late in the frame.

The Falcons collected all three of their goals in the first period, as senior Ian Malcolmson (Waukesha, Wis.) struck first just over four minutes into the contest. Junior Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) doubled the Falcons' lead just thirty seconds later, and senior defenseman Rex Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) pushed the lead even further with a tally on the power play at 11:43 in the first.

However, the Lions resisted any push from the Falcons for complacency, attempting to claw their way back into the contest. They got just that in the final minutes of the period, as Stanley Lucas put a foot in the door for Lindenwood.

Neither team did any damage on the scoreboard in the second period, despite a fair number of scoring chances. The Lions spent nearly six minutes on the man advantage, and Concordia was awarded a power play of its own. However, both goalkeepers stood tall, as senior Vincent Falcone (Elgin, Ill.) made fourteen saves for the Falcons in the period and Ethan Paulin-Hatch picked up eight for Lindenwood.

The Lions struck early in the third period, as Gage Vierzba cut the deficit in half with a snipe past Falcone. The tying goal would come much later in the period amidst a strong offensive push, concluded by Sam Watson evening the game at 13:25. Finally, in the game's 59th minute, the Lions took the lead. Michael Mullen gave Lindenwood its first lead of the game off of assists from Nolan Kahl and Steve Avalone, and the clock struck zero before Concordia was able to draw back to even.

Falcoce finished with a career-high 44 saves on 48 shots for the Falcons.

Concordia will be back on the ice on Sunday, November 5 to conclude the back-to-back with Lindenwood.
