ACHA Completes the Sweep in the Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – CUW's ACHA men's hockey team took down the Lakers of Lake Superior State with a score of 5-2 on Saturday to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Sharp passing from the Falcons led to their first goal as senior Ian Malcolmson (Waukesha, Wis.) found freshman Chuck Emme (Glenview, Ill.), triggering the 2-on-1 break with Emme and senior Garrett Wildermann (Waukesha, Wis.) skating towards the goal. As his angle to the goal shrunk, Emme left the puck in the front of the goal for the streaking Wildermann, who put in the one-timer to give CUW the 1-0 lead at the 10:45 mark of the first period.

But the Lakers would respond and take the 2-1 lead later in the first period.

With 1:31 remaining in the first period, the Blue and White's tight passing helped them level the score at two, as senior Rex Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) found fellow senior Easton Williams (Racine, Wis.) in front of the net to send the score to 2-2 heading into the first intermission.

The score remained 2-2 after the second period of play as neither team could find the back of the net.

However, the Falcons' offense would wake up in the third period.

With 15:12 remaining in the contest, Chuck Emme found an open Ian Malcolmson unmarked in the middle of the ice. After a smooth pass from Emme, Malcomson, with time, ripped a shot past the keeper to take a 3-2 lead.

Senior Trenton Sherman (Farmington, Minn.) added to CUW's lead eight minutes later as Ian Malcolmson found Sherman open on the far side of the net, who slapped the puck past the unsuspecting Lake Superior State goaltender to go up 4-2.

The third and final goal of the third period came courtesy of Chuck Emme via the power play. With the advantage, Ian Malcolmson whipped the puck over to Rex Staudacher, who slid it over to Emme. With space, Emme played the puck toward the goal before firing a shot into the goal to give CUW the 5-2 lead.

Senior Vincent Falcone (Elgin, Ill.) recorded 13 saves in the win.

The Falcons will look ahead to next weekend as they will take on the Golden Eagles of Marquette.
