Pfannerstill scores twice, guides Women's Soccer to NACC victory over MSOE

MEQUON, Wis. – Sophomore Carley Pfannerstill scored her team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season to help the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team snap its three-match losing streak. The Falcons would add two more goals as they rolled to a 4-0 win over MSOE Saturday at Fitting Field.

Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) scored the only goal of what was a very evenly played opening half, netting her 12th mark of the season at the 5:36 mark, unassisted. The Falcons and Raiders each recorded six shots in the opening 45 minutes, but freshman Alyssa Schmitt (Cedar Grove, Wis.) made three saves to keep the Falcons lead at 1-0.

The explosive CUW offense got rolling in the second half, scoring three times in an 8:26 span. Pfannerstill scored her second goal of the match at the 55:54 mark off a pass from sophomore Emily Ciesielczyk (Waukesha, Wis.). Sophomore Brittany Klumpp (Rubicon, Wis.) then made the score 3-0 at the 62:06 mark, scoring unassisted, while junior Anna Hirssig (Rochester, Minn.) netted her 11th score of the season just 2:14 later off another assist from Ciesielczyk.

The Falcons won with little doubt despite being outshot by the Raiders, 14-12. CUW did put eight of those 12 shots on net compared to just six on goal for the Raiders who were shutout by the duo of Schmitt and freshman Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.). Worthing came on to play the second half and recorded three saves.

The win in net was the first career for Schmitt who was also making her first career collegiate start. The Raiders Haley Anderson finished with four saves while playing the full 90 minutes.

Klumpp, Pfannerstill and Ciesielczyk all finished with three shots to pace the CUW attach. Sara Travia finished with five shots for the Raiders, but was finished without a point for the first time in six matches. CUW got strong defensive performances from freshmen Abigail Freeland (Grafton, Wis.) and Kayla Severinsen (Schaumburg, Ill.), sophomore Krista Oelhafen (Allenton, Wis.) and senior Michele Karsten (Waukesha, Wis.), among others.

The win now puts CUW in sole possession of third place in the NACC standings. The Falcons sit at 6-2-0 with three league matches remaining.

CUW will return to action Tuesday for their regular-season home finale against current NACC-leader Edgewood College. The Falcons and Eagles are slated for a 3 p.m. start. Live audio and stats will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
