Women's Soccer falls in non-conference match with St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. – There was plenty of scoring Saturday afternoon between the Concordia University Wisconsin women's soccer team and St. Norbert College. Unfortunately for the Falcons, SNC would find the back of the net once more as the Green Knights came out on top, 4-3, in a non-conference match.

CUW sophomore Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) scored two goals in the loss, her team-leading third and fourth tallies of the season. The Green Knights also got an exceptional individual performance from Katie Vanden Avond as she recorded a hat trick, bringing her season goal total to eight through five matches.

After 34 minutes of scoreless play, both offenses began founding their rhythm late in the first half, beginning with a SNC goal off the foot of Elly Wiebusch. Her goal came at the 34:01 mark, giving the Green Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons would tie the match just 4:55 later when Pfannerstill netted her first goal of the contest, an unassisted mark. SNC would quickly take the lead back as Vanden Avond scored off a Zoe Kurth pass with 4:14 remaining in the opening half.

CUW came out of the gates strong in the second half as Pfannerstill scored her second goal of the match just 24 seconds into the half. Her unassisted goal tied the score at 2-2.

The 2-2 score would remain until the 61:20 mark when Vanden Avond scored her second goal, and then completed her hat trick at the 71:47 mark to give SNC a comfortable 4-2 lead. The Falcons would cut the lead to 4-3 with 3:50 left in the match as freshman Rachel Suarez (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) recorded her first career collegiate goal.

St. Norbert (3-1-1) held a commanding 21-6 edge in shots, but CUW made the most of their six, scoring on half of their attempts. For the third time this season, CUW split time with their goalies as freshman Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) played the opening 45 minutes, making one save. Freshman Alyssa Schmitt (Cedar Grove, Wis.) came on for the second half, recording four saves. Sarah Platzer got the win in net for the Green Knights as she stopped two shots.

CUW (2-4-0) will have a week off before opening up Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play next Saturday at Dominican University. The Falcons and Stars will begin at 3:30 p.m. and live stats and video will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
