Brehmer records hat trick, Women’s Soccer downs St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. - Hannah Brehmer recorded a hat trick during the second half and the Concordia University Wisconsin women's soccer team unleashed an offensive attack to come from behind to defeat St. Norbert College, 5-3, on Tuesday night on Kolstad Field at Schneider Stadium.
Brehmer (sophomore, Eagle River, Alaska) lit up the scoreboard during a 28 minute stretch in the second period with seven points - three goals and an assist - as the Falcons tallied four second half goals to run away from the Green Knights. It was CUW's (8-5-0) first non-conference victory of the season and its fifth match this season scoring five or more goals.
Senior Kelly Sippel (Fond du Lac, Wis.) finished with a goal and an assist, while junior Lauren Straehler (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded two assists and sophomore Ashley Apazeller (Jackson, Wis.) added an assist of her own. Junior Samantha Anacker (Janesville, Wis.) made two saves in the contest.
The Falcons held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, but were outshot 14-12 in the contest. There were four lead changes and three scoring ties in the back-and-forth affair.
Katie Vanden Avond recorded a hat trick of her own to lead SNC (6-6-1). She tallied her first at the 19:30 mark of the opening period off a header, with Jaci Kulow getting the assist.
Freshman Hannah Folgate (Austin, Texas) responded for the Falcons with a rebound goal less than nine minutes to later to tie the match at one goal apiece. Straehler was credited with the assist on the score.
Vanden Avond pushed the Green Knights back in front just after halftime with a tally after she dribbled through a pack of defenders to find the back of the net. Kellan Zimmer assisted on the goal.
Brehmer began her string of goals at the 49:37 mark of the second half with a goal after collecting the ball and firing off a rebound to knot the match at 2-2. Sippel recorded the assist on the goal.
SNC's Vanden Avond finished her hat trick with a score less than nine minutes later off a header from a crossing pass by Katherine Larson.
The Falcons tied the match and took the lead for good when Brehmer blasted the ball to the back of the net from 20 yards out to tie the match. She then outran the defense and laced a shot just inside the far post for her ninth goal of the season.
Sippel added an insurance score - her fifth of the season - at the 77:57 mark of the match to give CUW a two-goal cushion.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a homecoming matchup against Wisconsin Lutheran College at Fitting Field.
