Women’s Soccer defeats Edgewood

MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin women's soccer team recovered from back-to-back defeats in dramatic fashion; scoring two second half goals to erase a first-half deficit and take down Northern Athletics Conference rival Edgewood College on Tuesday afternoon at Fitting Field.

The win also meant the Falcons remained in second place in the NAC with a 6-2-0 record.

CUW scored the game-winning goal after senior Kelli Wittenberg (Sturtevant, Wis.) cleaned up a close-range rebound in the 71st minute from Eagles goalkeeper Kristi Frisch who fumbled a shot from CUW junior Lauren Straehler (Pewaukee, Wis.).

Edgewood pushed up the field in search of a late equalizer, but the Falcons defense did their job to smother several Eagles chances and secure the victory.

The Eagles (7-4-1, 4-2-1 NAC) took the early lead just over 17 minutes into the contest on a goal from forward Kristina Santaga, with the assist being credited to Brianna Franken.

Santaga was in the middle of the action only 10 minutes later, when she sprinted into the penalty area only to be taken down by CUW goalkeeper Samantha Anacker (junior, Janesville, Wis.).

The play resulted in a yellow card for Anacker and a penalty kick for Edgewood, but the Falcon keeper made up for her mistake by diving to her right and saving Elaine Gerry's effort from the penalty spot.

The score remained 1-0 until the 64th minute, when sophomore Ashley Apazeller (Jackson, Wis.) collected the ball at the top of the box and fired into the far corner to pull CUW even at 1-1.

Next up for the CUW is a trip to Lisle, Ill., to take on Benedictine University on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The match is the first part of a doubleheader with the corresponding men's match to follow.
