No. 8 Bulldogs Slip Past Falcons in CIT Championship

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team was topped 78-48 in the championship match of the Concordia Invitational Tournament by the No. 8-ranked Concordia Nebraska Bulldogs of scholarship-receiving NAIA. After a victory in Friday's semifinal against Concordia Chicago, the Falcons finished as the event's runner-up.

Senior Erin Viergutz (Clintonville, Wis.) and junior Aubrey Debauch (Gillett, Wis.) opened the game's scoring, pushing the Falcons to a 4-0 lead. The two squads remained neck-and-neck for the first quarter, ultimately carrying a 14-14 tie into the second frame. DeBauch's four points in the first 10 minutes of play led all scorers, while Viergutz picked up three of her game-best 11 rebounds.

A three-pointer from sophomore Ava Booth (Plymouth, Wis.) granted the Falcons the lead 1:55 into the second quarter before an answering triple for the Bulldogs on the other end of the floor. Viergutz tallied the game's next three points to recollect the Falcons' lead, but the Bulldogs once again stormed back. An ensuing scoring run for the duration of the quarter would give Concordia Nebraska a 40-28 lead at the game's midway point.

The Falcons and Bulldogs largely traded points in the third quarter, with the latter taking a slim 15-13 scoring advantage in the frame. Concordia Nebraska further expanded its lead in the final 10 minutes of the contest to take a 78-48 victory and claim the CIT Championship.

Erin Viergutz was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The 78 points are the fewest that CUNE has scored on the Falcons since 2016.

The Falcons will next battle the 14-6 Aurora Spartans in a NACC matchup on January 31.
