Women's Basketball Takes Down Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Concordia University Wisconsin women's basketball team improved to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Saturday when they picked up the 69-52 road win over the Stars of Dominican University. 

The first quarter saw Dominican jump out to a quick lead, but CUW swiftly leveled the score to 6-6 on a made jump shot from Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.).

Later, with 3:20 remaining in the quarter, junior Aubrey DeBauch (Gillet, Wis.) hit a jump shot once again to retake the lead for CUW, 11-10. 

However, the Stars would respond and conclude the first quarter with an 18-13 advantage over CUW. 

The second quarter saw the Falcons' offense come alive as CUW outscored Dominican 28-16. 

Senior Madeline Taubenheim (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) secured the first lead of the quarter, drilling a triple with an assist from freshman Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.), giving CUW a narrow 25-23 lead. Aubrey DeBauch extended the lead with a jump shot in the following possession.

Midway through the quarter, Erin Viergutz made a layup in three consecutive possessions, maintaining CUW's lead at 35-30 with 4:24 remaining. 

Sophomore Ava Booth would score the quarter's final four points for CUW as the Falcons entered half, enjoying a seven-point lead at 41-34.

The third quarter saw the Falcons showcase their defensive prowess, limiting the Stars to just four points while extending their lead to 21. Jayden Ross opened the quarter with back-to-back layups, and Erin Viergutz closed it with six consecutive points. 

In the fourth quarter, the Falcons maintained their lead and took the 69-52 win, with additional baskets from Deidre Lassiter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), sophomore Kaitlyn Carothers (Columbus, Ind.) and junior Abby Hafemann (Hales Corners, Wis.). 

In the win, Erin Viergutz recorded a double-double, tallying 18 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Aubrey DeBauch added 15 points. 

Defensively, as a unit, the Falcons held the Stars to 52 points on 20-of-63 shooting. 

Looking ahead, the Blue and White will hit the court on Wednesday, Jan. 10th, when they hit the road to go to Benedictine, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
