Men's Hockey falls to No. 15 Lake Forest in NCHA play

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team dropped its sixth straight Saturday night, falling 5-1 to No. 15 Lake Forest College in NCHA play. The Foresters, who also defeated CUW last night, took home the Border Battle Cup as a result of the weekend sweep.

Saturday's game saw the two teams combine for 62 penalty minutes, 50 of those belonging to the Falcons. CUW had three separate 10-minute penalties, two misconducts and a game misconduct. All-in-all Lake Forest got eight power play opportunities and the Foresters converted on two of those chances.

Early in the game it appeared the Falcons had upset on their minds as they took a 1-0 lead 7:14 into play on a goal from freshman Brody Decker (Dousman, Wis.). Decker's score was assisted by freshman Braden Crone (Metiskow, Alberta) and sophomore Cody Dixon (Hales Corners, Wis.).

The CUW lead would hold for exactly 12 minutes as the Foresters knotted the game at 1-1 with 46 seconds remaining in the first. Ben Certo scored the power play goal for Lake Forest, making the score even heading into the first intermission.

Just one goal was scored in the second 20 minutes of play, but it was the game-winner from the Foresters Bobby Barrett. Barrett's goal 10:24 into the second came off an assist from Jack Lewis, making the score 2-1.

The Foresters, a team holds the nation's longest unbeaten streak at 13 games, would add three goals over the third period to make the final score 5-1. Lewis scored one of those goals as he and Andrew Stein each had a goal and an assist to pace the LFC attack.

The other story of the night besides the penalties was the play of Leo Podolsky. The Foresters netminder finished with 31 saves and stopped the final 30 shots he faced Saturday night. The Falcons turned to Jake Hebda (Firestone, Colo.) at goalie as he made his first start since November 15. Hebda finished the game with 22 saves.

The Falcons will return to action next weekend in a home-and-home series against Marian University. The opener is set for 7 p.m. at Marian, while CUW will host at the Ozaukee Ice Center Saturday at 7 p.m.
