UW-Superior snaps Men's Hockey's five-game winning streak

SUPERIOR, Wis. – UW-Superior used 2-0 advantages in the first and third periods to snap the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey's five-game winning streak Friday night. The Yellowjackets tallied two goals in each period en route to a 6-2 non-conference win over the Falcons.

UW-Superior built a 3-0 lead early into the second period Friday night before the Falcons got on the scoreboard with two unanswered goals, making the score 3-2 midway through the second. Sophomore Cody Dixon (Hales Corners, Wis.) and junior Chris Hughes (Dundee, Mich.) netted the Falcons scores, Hughes goals coming on the power play.

Unfortunately for CUW, the Yellowjackets had one more 3-0 surge in them, scoring once later in the second period and posting two late third period goals for the 6-2 final. Jordan Neduzak scored two of the final three goals for UW-Superior, finishing the night with a team-best two scores.

It was Dylan Nelson who put the Yellowjackets up 2:26 into play on a goal scored off assists from Jordan Shockely and Owen Stauber. Anton Svennson would give Superior a 2-0 lead at the 12:52 mark of the first before Tanner Dion made it 3-0 1:56 into the second period.

Dixon's score came 7:24 into the second period and was assisted by freshman Anthony Pickering (Sylvan Lake, Alberta). Pickering picked up a point after seeing his recent eight-game point streak snapped in Wednesday's 5-3 win over Aurora. The rookie will look to build another streak as his recent one tied a Falcons program record.

Hughes then netted the Falcons only power play goal in five chances on a score assisted by junior Devin Stuermer (Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Tanner Bull (Brooklin, Ontario). Stuermer's assist brings his career point total to 59, which means he is now one shy of tying to program's all-time mark, set by Jonathan Smith from 2007-11.

Junior Domingo Torrenueva (Oshawa, Ontario) made 32 saves in suffering his first loss of the season for the Falcons. Torrenueva is now 4-1-0 in games he has started this season as he had 15 saves in the first period.

CUW (6-8-0) outshot the Yellowjackets 16-7 in the first period but unfortunately couldn't overcome a strong start from Corey Simons. Simons posted 33 saves for the game as the Yellowjackets ended the night with a 38-35 edge in shots.

The two teams combined for 22 penalty minutes on 11 infractions. CUW was whistled five times for a total of 10 minutes in the box, while UW-Superior was penalized once more, six times for 12 minutes.

CUW will visit another Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent tomorrow as it takes on UW-Stout. The Falcons and Blue Devils are set for a 7:30 p.m. start in Menomonie, Wis.
