Falcons Come Out Victorious in Battle of the Concordias

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons women's basketball team welcomed the Cougars of Concordia Chicago in a makeup game of the originally scheduled Jan. 8 game.

"It was great to see us handle their runs," said head coach Stacey Brunner-Jones. "We've had to deal with a lot of injuries and as long as we continue to grow as a team, good things will happen. Young players equal ups and downs, but I'm optimistic about our growth."

The Falcons started hot with a 5-0 run to begin the matchup with baskets from junior Reagan Obry (Neenah, Wis.) and senior Camryn Szolyga (Waukesha, Wis.).

The Cougars went on a 4-0 run to cut the Falcon lead to one.  Szolyga put up five more points in the next three minutes with a layup and a three-pointer from the top of the key to push the Falcons lead back to five.

The Falcons went into the first break with the 14-9 lead.

A basket by Obry and another by junior Lindsey Smitsdorff (Coon Rapids, Minn.) started off the second quarter giving the Falcons the 18-9 lead.

The Cougars pulled back to within four with six minutes left in the half with a score of 20-16.

This close score was short-lived with the Falcons going on a 6-0 run with four points from freshman Lindsey Lonigro (Deerfield, Wis.) and two from sophomore Deidre Lassiter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).

The game went into halftime with a score of 26-20 in favor of the Falcons.

The Falcons started the third quarter hot again with a 7-0 run with baskets from Obry, Smitsdorff, and Szolyga to take the 33-20 lead.

A basket from the Cougars ended that run, but the Falcons answered back yet again with a pair of free throws from Smitsdorff with 6:48 left in the third.

A pair of layups from sophomore Erin Viergutz (Clintonville, Wis.), as well as a pair of three-point baskets from fellow sophomore Madeline Taubenheim (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), led to a 45-29 lead for the Falcons.

The quarter ended with a score of 45-32 after a Cougar three-pointer.

Another quarter meant another Falcon run to start with a 4-0 run from Lindsey Smitsdorff to begin the fourth.

The Falcons ended the game on a 7-5 run to take the victory 64-44.

Szolyga led the Falcons in points with 14.  Close behind her was Smitsdorff at 13.  Szolyga brought in five rebounds and dished out eight assists.  Smitsdorff led all Falcons with nine rebounds.

Taubenheim snagged a career-high nine points on 3-4 shooting from the three-point line.  She added four rebounds and two assists to her line.

The Falcons look toward their next matchup with the Marian Sabres on Feb. 1.
