Falcons Outlast Raiders

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The CUW women's basketball team traveled to take on MSOE in their second game of a back-to-back road stand.  

The Falcons started hot, jumping out to a 13-3 lead in the fifth minute of the first quarter. The Raiders stormed back with a 10-point run to tie the Falcons at 13. The Raiders finished ahead 17-15 at the end of the quarter.

The Falcons jumped out to an eight-point lead late in the second quarter after a three-point basket by freshman Lindsey Lonigro (Deerfield, Wis.) and free throws from junior Kathryn Kirkwood (Milwaukee, Wis.), junior Reagan Obry (Neenah, Wis.), and junior Lindsey Smitsdorff (Coon Rapids, Minn.). The Falcons went into the break with a 29-24 lead.

The third quarter was low scoring and saw the Falcons only sinking three baskets and a free throw. 

Obry scored four of the seven Falcon points in the third quarter. The Raiders would get the edge on the Falcons and went into the fourth with a 41-36 lead. 

The Falcons didn't give in but came out with an and-one from Kirkwood to cut the Raider lead to two. 

With a big three-point basket from senior Aubrey Buchholtz (Seymour, Wis.), the Falcons tied the Raiders at 44 with eight minutes left in the game. It stayed that way for the next four minutes with huge defensive efforts from both teams. The Raiders hit a couple of key shots to take a three-point lead over the Falcons with two and a half minutes left.  

Smitsdorff went on to hit six of the next 10 Falcon points to give the final edge to the Falcons with a final score of 54-51 in favor of the Falcons.

Kirkwood led the scoring for the Falcons with 15 points and added four rebounds and an assist. 

Smitsdorff led the Falcon rebounding, and all-game rebounding, with 15 rebounds as well as adding 11 points and four blocks.

Smitsdorff continued her double-digit rebounding game streak tonight with her fourth in a row. This is her second double-double in a row as well.

Reagan Obry led all Falcons with four steals and she added 14 points and five rebounds to her total as well.

The Falcons return home on the 11th to take on the Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Tech.
