Crone delivers in OT, Men's Hockey stuns No. 13 St. Scholastica

MEQUON, Wis. – As time winded down in overtime it looked as if the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team would have to settle for a 2-2 tie against No. 13 St. Scholastica on Friday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center. Sophomore Braden Crone had other ideas however as he picked up a rebound goal with 8.9 seconds remaining, lifting the Falcons to a 3-2 win over the Saints.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons controlled the puck in their zone over the final seconds of overtime, which was also 4-on-4 thanks to penalties on each team late in the extra session. Crone's goal was assisted by seniors Trammell Lynes (Edmonton, Alberta) and Eli Riddle (Blissfield, Mich.), two of the four players who will be honored at Senior Day tomorrow.

- The Falcons got to that point by erasing a 2-0 deficit. After a scoreless first period, St. Scholastica scored twice in the second stanza, the second of those coming with 6:59 to play in the period.

- CUW went to work, which included a late second period shorthanded goal from freshman Connor Hogg (London, Ontario) with 1:45 to play in the frame. Crone and sophomore Jared Pilet (Seattle, Wash.) assisted on the goal, which was the Falcons second shorthanded score of the season.

- CUW would then tie the game 2-2 just 26 seconds into the third when freshman Taylor Gauld (Whitby, Ontario) lit the lamp for the fifth time this season. Senior captain Buster Hebda (Firestone, Colo.) and junior Tanner Bull (Brooklin, Ontario) aided the Gauld equalizer.

- Freshman Jack Romanuik (Melfort, Saskatchewan) was outstanding between the pipes for the Falcons, specifically in the third period and overtime sessions. Romanuik stood on his head from time to time and made big save after big save en route to his sixth win of the year. He ended the night with 35 saves, 15 of those coming in the final 24:52 of play. He added nine saves in his perfect first 20 minutes of play as well.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Coming into the season the Falcons had just one win over a ranked opponent. CUW has three this season after the win Friday night. They also defeated then No. 13 MSOE earlier this season and took down then No. 8 UW-Eau Claire on the road as well.

- The 10 wins ties a Falcons single-season record for most in a season. CUW also captured 10 wins two years ago.

- The overtime win was just the third for the Falcons in program history. Two seasons ago the Falcons downed Lawrence in overtime, while in 2008-09 they defeated Marian in the extra session. Crone's goal was the latest game-winner in program history.
