Women's Tennis defeats Lake Forest, drops match to Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin began Sunday with a 6-3 non-conference victory over Lake Forest College, before dropping a 5-0 decision to Carthage College that was hampered by inclement weather.

The Falcons began the day with a pair of victories in doubles to play to take a 2-1 advantage in the match against the Foresters. Senior Emily McCormick (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Michaela Wagner (Oswego, Ill.) earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Sabine Jacobsen (Palatine, Ill.) and Anna Shanks (Kingsford, Mich.) needed extra points before winning 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.

Junior Ashley Knoll (Wilmot, Wis.) had the easiest victory during singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 6 singles. The Falcons lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but recorded wins in the rest of the singles lineup. Wagner had a 6-3, 6-2 win over her No. 4 singles opponent, while sophomore Jessica Sapp (Memphis, Mich.) won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

The most difficult singles victory over Lake Forest was by Jacobsen who had to grind out a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) victory at No. 3 singles.

Things were much more difficult for CUW in the afternoon match against Carthage, as they lost all three doubles match by scores of 8-0. The Lady Reds captured 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles before the rain moved in and halted play. It was determined that the remaining four singles matches would be unfinished, as Carthage had earned the necessary five points needed for the win.

CUW (11-9) will next host Alverno College in a non-conference match on Thursday at 4:30 pm.
