Women's Tennis drops season opener

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin began the fall portion of its 2014-15 campaign with a 6-3 defeat at Carroll University on Friday afternoon. The Falcons dropped all three doubles matches before splitting six singles matches.

CUW (0-1) head coach Steve Anschutz put a youthful lineup together, using five underclassmen, and the results were difficult in doubles play as the Falcons earned just five points. It was a different story in singles competition, however, as CUW and CU (2-0) split six matches.

Sophomore Elizabeth Carroll (Hartford, Wis.) picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while senior Emily McCormick (Waukesha, Wis.) and junior Ashley Knoll (Wilmot, Wis.) needed extra points for their victories. McCormick took down her No. 5 singles opponent 2-6, 6-2, 10-3, while Sapp earned a difficult 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.

The Falcons defeat snapped a streak of winning the season-opening match the past three seasons. They won't have much time to hang their heads, as a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday. CUW will travel to Aurora University for a 10 a.m. showdown before traveling to Benedictine University for a 2 p.m. match.
