Hirssig scores late, Women's Soccer falls to Aurora at home

MEQUON, Wis. – Anna Hirssig scored a free-kick goal with just over a minute remaining, but it wasn't enough as Concordia University Wisconsin fell to Aurora University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Fitting Field.

The loss for a the Falcons snaps a four-match Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference winning streak and drops them into third place in the league standings. Statistics were even throughout the match for both teams, despite CUW holding a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

AU (10-3-1, 6-0-0 NACC) marked the scoreboard first on a Nicci Bermudes goal that was kicked from 20 yards out on the right side of the goal just under 12 minutes into the match. The Spartans increased their lead to two goals at 66:15 in the second half after Brittany Roydhouse tallied a breakaway goal.

CUW had trouble during the second period gaining and controlling possession, but did put together a late flurry with just over a minute to play in regulation. Following a foul by the Spartans, Hirssig (senior, Rochester, Minn.) crossed a free-kick shot that found the back of the net with one minute and six seconds left in the game.

Hirssig and junior Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) led the Falcons with four shots each, with Hirssig taking two shots on goal. Sophomore Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) took the loss in net after making a trio of saves.

Bermudes led all players with seven shots, including four shots on goal for the Falcons. Rachael Warnock earned the victory between the pipes in a complete game effort with three saves.

CUW (9-4-0, 4-1-0 NACC) returns to action on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. NACC contest at Marian University.
