Women's Soccer edged by Lake Forest in season opener

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – A Lake Forest goal early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team fell in its season-opening match. LFC scored at the 61:49 mark, handing the Falcons a 2-1 defeat Saturday afternoon.

It was Michelle Greeneway who provided the game-winner for the Foresters, her second goal of the contest. Greeneway took a pass from Holly Lesperance and buried the winning goal, while her first score came at the 39:06 mark of the opening half off assists from Sam Hillis and Kyle Chavarria.

The Falcons got on the board first Saturday when freshman Breanne Thomas (Oconomowoc, Wis.) struck at the 36:13 mark. The Thomas goal was assisted by junior Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.).

Normally scoring first leads to a CUW victory as the loss marked the first time in 32 tries that the Falcons fell when leading 1-0. The last time the Falcons fell when building a 1-0 advantage was against UW-Oshkosh in the 2009 season. 

CUW split time between two goalkeepers as sophomore Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) played the opening half, while freshman Tabitha Ortiz (Plainfield, Ill.) was the goalie of record, playing the second half. Each keeper made one save and allowed one goal.

Caroline Kirsch picked up the win as the Foresters keeper stopped four shots. LFC held a 13-12 advantage in shots in the contest as Greeneway and Pfannerstill tied for a match-best six apiece.

CUW (0-1-0) will return to action Wednesday, visiting UW-Whitewater in non-conference action. The match between the Falcons and Warhawks is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
