Women's Soccer edges UW-Oshkosh for fourth straight win

MEQUON, Wis. – Junior Carley Pfannerstill netted a goal at the 75th minute to lead the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team past UW-Oshkosh in non-conference play Tuesday. The 1-0 win helped CUW push its winning streak to four.
Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) took a pass from junior Brittany Klumpp (Rubicon, Wis.) and beat the keeper in the top left corner, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead with 14:57 to play. The CUW defense would hold on and record its third shutout in its last four matches.
The Falcons wouldn't escape easily as UWO had several chances to score in the contest, including a few after falling behind 1-0. The best chance for Oshkosh came with about three minutes remaining when the Titans hit the crossbar for the second time in the match, narrowly missing out on the sending the match into overtime.
Freshman Tabitha Ortiz (Plainfield, Ill.) continued her strong play as the Falcons keeper, recording her second straight shutout. Ortiz made four saves as CUW has gotten strong play from both her and sophomore Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) since the duo started alternating games three matches into the season.
UW-Oshkosh (3-3-2) outshot the Falcons 16-11, including an 11-4 edge in the first half. CUW finished with just two shots on goal, but Pfannerstill was able to provide the lone goal on one of those two attempts. The other Falcons shot on goal came from Emily Ciesielczyk (Waukesha, Wis.) in the second half.
Nina Muzi made one save for the Titans, playing the entire match. Rachel Elliot finished with three shots for UWO, while her sister Robyn added three. Pfannerstill led all players with six shots.
With the win, CUW now has back-to-back wins against the highly competitive WIAC. The Falcons have just four wins against that league since the start of the 2003 season, as this year's team is showcasing it's talents against top-level competition.
CUW will look to continue its winning ways Saturday in its NACC opener against Dominican University. The Falcons and Stars are set for a 1 p.m. start.
