Late Carthage score snaps seven-match win streak for Women's Soccer

MEQUON, Wis. – Amy Kappelman of Carthage College scored a rebound goal with 11:23 remaining in regulation, lifting her team to a 2-1 win over Concordia University Wisconsin in non-conference Women's Soccer action at Fitting Field Tuesday.

The Kappelman goal snapped a seven-match win streak for CUW, the longest such streak for the Falcons in the Ryan Middendorf era (2003-present). There were several Carthage players and Falcons around the net, but Kappelman was able to get a rebound off the Falcons keeper, giving her team a one-goal edge.

The goal capped off an exciting second half that saw CC hold a 9-7 edge in shots. Each team had scoring opportunities in the second half, more coming for the Lady Reds as Falcons keeper Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) made five saves over the final 45 minutes. Worthing had an impressive stop midway through the half when Carthage appeared poised for a breakaway goal but Worthing was able to deflect the ball enough where it bounced off the crossbar, keeping the match tied at 1-1.

CUW and Carthage exchanged early goals in the first half to make the score 1-1 after 45 minutes of play. Lauren Szumski gave the Lady Reds a 1-0 advantage just 5:09 into play when she buried a left-footed shot from 25 yards out. Carthage had possession in their offensive zone and CUW tried to clear the ball out, but Szumski retained possession to record her first goal of 2014.

Just 10:01 later the Falcons responded as junior Brittany Klumpp (Rubicon, Wis.) netted her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Klumpp was inside the six-yard box when she was able to find the upper-right corner, making the score read 1-1.

The rest of the first half saw CUW control possession for better scoring opportunities. The Falcons tallied a 9-2 edge in shots in the first half, finishing the match with a 16-11 advantage. Carthage keeper Abby Alm made five first-half saves and finished the match with six for her fourth win of the season.

Worthing tied a career high with six saves as she suffered her first loss of the season. Each team finished with six fouls in the match. Junior Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) led all players with seven shots, while Madeline Peno finished with three to pace the Lady Reds.

CUW (7-3-0) will return to the pitch Saturday in NACC action against Benedictine University. The Falcons and Eagles are set for a 3:30 p.m. start in Lisle, Ill.
