Falcons Outshine the Stars

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons returned to the win column on Wednesday night with a 75-70 victory. The victory sends CUW to 9-8 on the season and to 8-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Falcons pushed the lead up to five points at 13-8 and 17-12 with baskets from junior Lily Guerra (Yorkville, Ill.) and senior Emily Hafemann (Hales Corners, Wis.).

The Stars took a brief lead with a 6-0 run at 18-17 but a three-point basket from freshman Ava Booth (Plymouth, Wis.) landed from in front of the Dominican bench to give the Falcons back the lead at 20-18.

A layup from senior Lindsey Smitsdorff (Coon Rapids, Minn.) ended the first-quarter scoring at 22-18.

Sophomore Lindsey Lonigro (Deerfield, Wis.) gave the Falcons their first basket in the second quarter with a jumper to beat the shot clock.

The Falcons found success underneath the basket in the second quarter with three-straight underhanded layups from junior Erin Viergutz (Clintonville, Wis.) and Emily Hafemann.

A 5-0 helped the Stars trim the Concordia lead to 32-29 before Emily drained a pair of baskets.

The Blue and White held a 36-32 lead as the buzzer sounded for halftime.

Baskets from Lily Guerra and Erin Viergutz started the third-quarter attack to grow the CUW lead.

A jump shot from Ava Booth extended the lead to 44-34 with a jump shot. But Stars kept hanging around a three-point basket cut the CUW lead to three points and then only trailed 53-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Stars hung tough in the fourth quarter and took the lead twice.

The Falcons responded with a three-point basket from Emily Hafemann to retake the lead at 64-62.

The Blue and White scored five points from Ava Booth to get some separation and secure the victory.

Emily Hafemann finished with a game-high 21 points and seven assists.

Ava Booth finished with a career-best 16 points.

Erin Viergutz reached 19 points and three blocks on Wednesday night.

Lindsey Lonigro and junior Madeline Taubenheim (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) both had a career-best night with eight rebounds.

The Falcons return to action on Friday evening at the Concordia Invitational Tournament against the scholarship-receiving Bulldogs of Concordia Nebraska. Fans will have to pay to watch "experience" Nebraska CIT.
