Men's Soccer ends regular season slate with shutout win over Edgewood

VERONA, Wis. – Two goals scored late in the first half and a strong defensive effort lifted the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team to a 2-0, shutout win over Edgewood College Wednesday night at Reddan Soccer Park. The match was the regular season finale for both teams.

The win secured the No. 5 seed in the NACC Tournament for the Falcons, while Edgewood drops to the No. 6 seed. CUW will open tournament play Sunday at No. 4 Aurora, with the match set to begin at noon at Vago Field.

Sophomore Jordan Moehn and junior Keegan Van Dusseldorp provided the scoring for CUW, with two goals 8:06 apart from one another. Freshman Luis Loya (Bolingbrook, Ill.) assisted on the two scores, running his season total to a team-best six. The second Falcons goal was scored with just 4:20 left in the half, allowing them to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The rest of the match was all about the Falcons ability to control possession and play strong defense. CUW ended the match with a 22-5 edge in shots, and when the Eagles did get a shot, the Falcons keepers were there to keep EC off the scoreboard. Senior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) made one save and earned the win, while junior Alec Brew (Appleton, Wis.) came on in relief, stopping all three shots he faced.

The first half was all CUW, resulting in a 13-0 advantage in shots, eight of those coming on goal. Moehn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) struck first at the 32:34 mark for his seventh goal of the season off the pass from Loya. Just over eight minutes later, Van Dusseldrop (Burlington, Wis.) netted his team-leading 11th goal, which also is a new career-best for the junior.

Van Dusseldorp, the conference's leader in shots, finished with a match-best seven. Loya added four shots, while Moehn and senior Adrian Vargas (Monterrey, Mexico) each put two on goal. The Falcons finished the night with 13 of their 22 shots coming on goal, keeping the EC goalkeeper duo of Kyle Wood and Matt Dammen plenty busy. Dammen made six saves in 45 minutes of work, while Wood stopped all five shots he faced in the second portion of play.

The win has the Falcons playing their best soccer of the season heading into the NACC Tournament. CUW has a 3-1-1 record over its last five matches, two of those wins coming on the road. They did drop their regular season contest against Aurora, a 3-1 setback on October 11 at Fitting Field.
