Men's Soccer plays to 1-1 draw with UW-Whitewater

MEQUON, Wis. – After 110 minutes of back-and-forth play, the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw against UW-Whitewater, Wednesday at Fitting Field.

Both teams had a few chances in the overtime sessions to end the match, but neither could deliver the winning goal. The best chance over the final 20 minutes came for the Falcons as freshman Luis Loya (Bolingbrook, Ill.) had a breakaway, but Josh Rohde of UWW made a spectacular save to keep the score tied.

Earlier in the first overtime UWW did find the back of the net, unfortunately for the Warhawks the play was called offsides, keeping the Falcons alive and well. The two teams ended up combining for five shots in the overtime sessions, only one of those coming on goal.

Junior Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) scored the lone Falcons goal, and what a goal it was at the 24:52 mark of the opening half. Van Dusseldorp took a pass from Loya about 30 yards out on the right side and ripped a shot that found the upper-left corner of the net, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The one-goal advantage would remain until the 62:59 mark of the second half as Justin Stanko tied the score at 1-1. Stanko took a cross from Sam Novak and was able to beat the Falcons keeper, for what would end up as the match's final goal.

The shots ended very close as UWW held a slight 16-13 advantage. While neither goalkeeper had a large number of saves, both were plenty busy defending corner kicks and cross passes throughout the length of the contest. Senior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) finished with three saves for the Falcons, while Rhode stopped two shots for the Warhawks.

The match also saw 35 fouls called between the two teams and four yellow cards issued, two to each team. UWW finished with a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Van Dusseldorp led all Falcons with five shots, while sophomore Justin Clayton (Crete, Ill.) and Loya each added three. Sam Kuchenreuther tied for match-best with five shots to pace the Warhawks, while Stanko and Ryan Reid tallied three apiece.

The tie against UWW concludes non-conference play for the Falcons in 2014 as the remaining nine matches are all Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contests. CUW will begin its conference stretch Saturday with a trip to face Benedictine University. The Falcons and Eagles are set for a 6 p.m. kickoff from Lisle, Ill.
