Men's Soccer falls to Dubuque in season opener

ELMHURST, Ill. – A 2-0 first-half deficit proved too much to overcome as the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team fell in its season-opener against the University of Dubuque by a 3-1 score Friday in Elmhurst.

After falling behind 2-0 at halftime, CUW struck first in the second half on a header by sophomore Jordan Moehn (Fond du Lac, Wis.). Moehn was able to beat the keeper off a cross from junior David Kulberg (Osseo, Minn.), which made the score 2-1 at the 58:28 mark.

CUW had some opportunities to tie the score, including a shot that went off the midway through the second half that would have been the equalizer. Dubuque eventually went back up two goals on a score by Gonzalo Hernandez with just under 12 minutes to play.

UD (1-0-0) scored just 4:07 into play Friday night when Bandon Wiley struck with an unassisted goal. The Spartans would make the score 2-0 with just 25 seconds left in the opening half on a goal from Andrew Guelle.

CUW controlled the second half, posting a 10-3 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes. The Falcons finished the contest with a 16-12 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Moehn and senior Diego Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.) tied for a team-best three shots, while Hernandez led all players with four.

Senior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) made two saves while playing all 90 minutes for the Falcons. His counterpart, Jose Resendiz stopped four shots to pick up the win.

CUW (0-1-0) will be back in action tomorrow against Elmhurst College. The match between the Falcons and Bluejays is set for 6:30 p.m. A live stats link will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
