Men's Soccer stunned by St. Norbert in double overtime

MEQUON, Wis. – When sophomore Jordan Moehn scored with just over six minutes remaining in regulation Wednesday, it appeared the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team was going to outlast St. Norbert College in its non-conference match at Fitting Field. The visiting Green Knights had other ideas, however, as they scored 3:23 later and then struck again in double overtime for a stunning, 4-3 victory.

The loss marks the second straight time CUW has fallen in double overtime, this score coming just 1:41 into the final session. Sergio Villalpando sent a cross the way of Tyler Kassube, who beat the Falcons keeper to give SNC a 4-3 advantage.

It was Sam Lamers who tied the match for SNC, scoring with 3:39 remaining in regulation of a pass from Sean Sladky. That goal ended a wild second half that saw each team score two times.

After a 1-1 opening 45 minutes, freshman Luis Loya (Bolingbrook, Ill.) connected on his first career collegiate goal at the 53:55 mark. Loya had an original shot blocked, but kept with the play and put the rebound in, giving the Falcons a 2-1 advantage.

SNC had a quick answer for the Falcons, which seemed to be the theme of the evening. The Green Knights scored just 1:04 later when Alex Schumacher took a corner kick from Kassube to even things up at 2-2. Kassube finished with a goal and two assists for SNC.

The opening half saw the Green Knights strike first when Cayden Lasecki scored at the 20:35 mark. Lasecki netted the header off a Kassube assist, which gave SNC a 1-0 lead until junior Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) responded with a header of his own with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Senior Diego Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.) had a perfect corner, recording an assist on the Falcons first score.

The Falcons finished with a 26-11 edge in shots, marking the third straight match in which they were able to outshoot their opponent. SNC tallied just six shots on goal, but unfortunately CUW was only able to come up with two saves. The Falcons finished with seven shots on goal.

Van Dusseldorp led all players with nine shots, while Campos and Loya each finished with four. Moehn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) added three shots for the Falcons, as did Kassube who led all Green Knight players.

CUW split action between goaltenders on Wednesday as sophomore Dillon Pallex (Pulaski, Wis.) saw his first career collegiate action, playing the second half and overtime sessions. Pallex made two saves in relief of starter Eric Vogel (senior - Itasca, Ill.). Scott Faul made four saves to pick up his second win of the season for SNC (2-0-0).

The Falcons will look to rebound on Saturday when they host Beloit College at 2:30 p.m. at Fitting Field. CUW will be hosting a four-team tournament this weekend as they will play North Park on Sunday, while Saint John's will also take part in the four-team field.
