Men's Hockey unable to solve MSOE in conference road game

MILWAUKEE – Coming into the weekend the MSOE Men's Hockey team knew it would likely be heading to the Harris Cup Playoffs. The Raiders didn't want to take any chances however as they rolled past Concordia University Wisconsin, 5-1, Friday night in the opening game of the battle for the Lake Michigan Cup.
Not only did the win put MSOE into the NCHA playoffs but it also made tomorrow night's contest at CUW a battle for the No. 6 seed. Earning the No. 6 seed means avoiding St. Norbert and Adrian for the opening round, the two team's currently ranked No. 1 and 2 in the nation.
MSOE built a 5-0 lead early into the third period en route to the key NCHA victory. The Falcons were able to get a goal later in the third when sophomore Trammell Lynes (Edmonton, Alberta) scored shorthanded with 10:47 remaining in play. Lynes goal was assisted by freshman Brett Penner (Medstead, Saskatchewan) and senior Dan Shilts (New Richmond, Wis.).
The Raiders were able to build a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes into play as they controlled the first period, outshooting CUW by a 21-8 mark. Brandan Unser and Jon Stevanovich scored the MSOE first-period goals. MSOE made it 3-0 in the second period on a power play score from Brent Wilcox. MSOE finished the game 2-for-6 with an extra skater, while CUW was 0-for-3.
MSOE (7-16-1, 6-9-2 NCHA) would then go on to make the score 5-0 early in the third before CUW got its lone goal. The Raiders continued their unbeaten record against CUW with the strong performance.
Sophomore Domingo Torrenueva (Oshawa, Ontario) got the start between the pipes for the Falcons (9-11-4, 6-9-2 NCHA), finishing with 33 saves. Freshman Morgan Hudson (Ottawa, Ontario) stopped 12 shots in relief for CUW. Austin Campbell recorded 33 saves for MSOE in the win.
The battle for the No. 6 seed in the Harris Cup Playoffs will be tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The game will also be Senior Night as CUW honors its three seniors before the game. Live coverage links will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
