Men's Hockey rallies past Lake Forest for fourth straight win

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Three goals over the final 10 minutes of play, including a game-winner from freshman Josh Herrington, lifted the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team to its fourth straight win Tuesday night. The Falcons used a 3-0 edge in the third period to defeat Lake Forest College, 6-4, in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play.

The Falcons entered the third period down 4-3 and that score would remain until the 10:09 mark when junior Matt Gates (Palatine, Ill.) scored the equalizer off a Dylan Hutton (Ajax, Ontario) assist. CUW then took the lead with 6:30 remaining in the game when Herrington (Aurora, Ontario) netted his first goal of the season. Herrington, who was playing in his first game this year, scored off assists from freshmen Brett Penner (Medstead, Saskatchewan) and Tanner Bull (Brooklin, Ontario).

The win helped CUW tie a program record with four straight victories, a feat they also accomplished at the beginning of last season. The Falcons now own a 6-4-3 overall record and are one win away from tying last year's team for the most in school history.

CUW would tack on an insurance goal just 1:38 later when Hutton scored his second goal of the night to give his team the 6-4 victory. Gates and sophomore Eli Riddle (Blissfield, Mich.) assisted on the Hutton score.

The opening period saw the two teams each score twice as CUW got on the board first when Hutton lit the lamp off an assist from Herrington. Lake Forest, who has now dropped six straight games, would answer with two goals from Jack Lewis and Bobby Barrett to take a 2-1 advantage. Penner would make sure CUW evened things up before the first intermission, scoring with 56 seconds left in the opening period. Sophomore Trammell Lynes (Edmonton, Alberta) and Herrington assisted on the Penner goal.

All three goals in the second period were scored via the power play as Lake Forest built a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of play. It was CUW who would take a 3-2 advantage just 2:34 into the second stanza when sophomore Devin Stuermer (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored off assists from freshman Kyle Fink (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Dan Shilts (New Richmond, Wis.). LFC would answer with two power play goals of its own, to gain the one-goal edge heading into the final period.

Each team had several chances with the extra man as a total of 18 penalties were called in the game. CUW went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Lake Forest countered with a 3-for-7 performance with an extra skater.

The Foresters held a 47-36 advantage in shots but sophomore goaltender Domingo Torrenueva (Oshawa, Ontario) gave another strong effort in gaining his fourth straight win since being inserted as the starter. Torrenueva posted a career-high 43 saves, while his counterpart, Austin Severson, finished with 30 saves.

CUW will go for its fifth straight win Friday when they take on St. Mary's University in a non-conference road game. Puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. and live coverage links will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
