Lake Forest deals Men's Hockey third straight setback

MEQUON, Wis. – A 3-1 second period that played to the advantage of Lake Forest College proved to be the difference as the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team dropped its third straight game Thursday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The final score was 5-3 in favor of the Foresters.

The loss drops CUW to fifth place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings as they entered the night tied with Lake Forest. The Falcons have plenty of time to move back up into the top four with six league games remaining.

Following a 1-1 first period Lake Forest came out and scored two goals within the opening 5:07 of the second to make the score 3-1. Anthony Annunziato scored the first goal of the second stanza at the 2:30 mark, while Mcauley Banning made the score 3-1 in favor of the Foresters.

Freshman Dylan Hutton (Ajax, Ontario) would bring the Falcons back to within one just 19 seconds after the Banning score. Hutton took a wraparound pass from freshman Brandt Weldon (The Pas, Manitoba) and beat the goaltender, making the score 3-2 in favor of LFC with 14:24 to play in the second period.

Lake Forest (9-8-1, 7-5-0 NCHA) would go back up two goals at the 11 minute mark of the second as Will Seeber lit the lamp for the third second period goal by the Foresters. Mike Violette and Bobby Barrett assisted on the Seeber score.

The Foresters would extend their lead to 5-2 at the 15:54 mark of the third period. CUW would add a goal with 12 seconds left in the contest as freshman Riley Storzuk (Wynyard, Saskatchewan) scored off assists from senior Brandon Bayer (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Hutton. Hutton now has five points in two games against the Foresters this season.

The opening period saw CUW go up 1-0 at the 8:30 mark when freshman Brett Penner (Medstead, Saskatchewan) got a goal which was assisted by sophomore Chris Hughes (Dundee, Mich.) and Storzuk. Lake Forest would even the score exactly one minute later on an Ian Pichel goal. The game marked the first time CUW lost this season after scoring the game's opening goal.

Sophomore Domingo Torrenueva (Oshawa, Ontario) finished the game with 37 saves as the Falcons were outshot 42-20, including 19-3 in the second period. Leo Podolsky made 17 saves to pick up his seventh win of the season.

CUW (8-7-3, 5-5-2 NCHA) will look to snap its current streak tomorrow when they host Amherst College for a non-conference matchup. The Falcons and Lord Jeffs are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Ozaukee Ice Center and will follow a women's hockey contest between CUW and St. Scholastica.
