Northland scores two late goals to down Men's Hockey

MEQUON, Wis. – Between dominating the shot total and finally taking its first lead midway through the third period, it appeared Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey was on its way to a victory over Northland College Friday night. The Lumberjacks had other ideas, scoring three times over the final 10 minutes to rally for a 4-2 win at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The final two NC goals came over the final 2:30 and were scored just 29 seconds apart. The Lumberjacks took advantage of a major penalty committed by CUW at the 16:06 mark of the third period, leaving the Falcons shorthanded for the remainder of regulation.

Northland (4-18-0, 4-11-0 NCHA) got the game-winning goal at the 17:31 mark of the third off the stick of Cody Hasbargen. The insurance goal came with two minutes remaining in play and was scored by Mike Lennon, also coming with the man advantage. The score was Lennon's second of the game.

The two teams entered the third period tied at 1-1 and freshman Riley Storzuk (Wynyard, Saskatchewan) gave the Falcons their first lead of the game midway through the third. Storzuk beat NC goaltender top shelf on a beautifully executed slap shot, which was assisted by sophomore Trammell Lynes (Edmonton, Alberta) and freshman Brett Penner (Medstead, Saskatchewan).

Northland would gain the tying goal just 2:30 later, scoring the first of three third-period power play goals. Mike Mikuan was credited with the equalizer, which was assisted by Thomas Greene and Matt Valley.

The opening period, which featured just two of the 48 combined penalty minutes, saw Northland take a lead, 1-0. This was all despite the fact that CUW dominated puck possession through 20 minutes, outshooting the Lumberjacks, 26-6. The 26 shots in one period are the most in CUW history. The Falcons finished with 49 shots, tied for the most in program history, the other time coming against Northland in 2007-08.

CUW (8-10-4, 5-8-2 NCHA) would tie the game at 2-2 at the 11:51 mark of the second period, taking advantage of a Northland major penalty. Sophomore Devin Stuermer (Milwaukee, Wis.) was credited with the goal after deflecting a shot by freshman Brandt Weldon (The Pas, Manitoba) by the goaltender. Sophomore Chris Hughes (Dundee, Mich.) also gained an assist on the play.

Freshman Morgan Hudson (Ottawa, Ontario) made 21 saves in his first start since November 29 for the Falcons. His counterpart, Mason Riley, showed why he leads the NCHA in saves, stopping 47 of 49 shots he faced on the night.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice Center. Puck is set to drop at 4 p.m. and live video will be available at CUWFalcons.com for fans who can't attend.
