Men's Hockey continues to roll with convincing win over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Devin Stuermer scored a pair of goals, Domingo Torrenueva continued his strong play between the pipes and the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team continued to roll with a 5-2 win over RV/No. 14 Augsburg College Saturday.

The Falcons have now won six in a row and did so by dominating a team receiving recognition in both national polls. The CUW offense continues to get it done as they continued their streak of scoring four or more goals (seven games). Four of the five Falcons goals came in the third period, including two by Stuermer (Milwaukee, Wis.), who set a new career-high for goals in a game.

Another big reason for the recent winning streak has been the play of Torrenueva (Oshawa, Ontario). He is now 6-0-0 in games he has started this season and was once again strong, making 28 saves.

It took 22:38 until a team scored on Saturday as Augsburg built a 1-0 lead 2:38 into the second period. Corbin Chapman put the Auggies in the lead with a goal scored on assists by Dylan Meier and Drew Allen. Sophomore Tanner Bull (Brooklin, Ontario) would even things up at 1-1 with a goal scored 8:18 into the second stanza. Freshman Cody Doiron (Caledon, Ontario) picked up the first of his two assists in the game on the first Falcons score.

The third period saw plenty of offense, much of that coming from CUW. Sophomore Harrison Newlands (Toronto, Ontario) gave the Falcons a 2-1 edge just 2:26 into the third, scoring off assists from freshman Dylan Hutton (Ajax, Ontario) and junior Matt Gates (Palatine, Ill.). Stuermer then put CUW up two goals, scoring the game-winner 7:57 into the third on a score assisted by senior Brandon Bayer (Milwaukee, Wis.). Gates then made the score 4-1 on a goal assisted by Doiron.

The Auggies (9-3-1) would cut the Falcons lead to 4-2 just 11 seconds later on a goal from Ben McClellan. CUW answered just 1:16 later when Stuermer lit the lamp for the second time, again scoring off an assist from Bayer.

Augsburg held a slight edge in shots, 30-28, but CUW dominated the third period by a 15-3 margin. The Falcons finished the afternoon 1-for-5 on the power play and held Augsburg scoreless on four chances with the extra skater.

CUW (8-4-3) will return to the rink next Friday when they host No. 4 St. Norbert College in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association showdown. Puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. and live coverage will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
